Meet Zachary the Youngest Member of the Pine Tree Quilters Guild

I first met Zach when I gave a presentation to the Pine Tree Quilters Guild. I recruited him to help me hold up quilts for show and tell. I met Zach a second time this weekend at the Pine Tree Quilters Quilt Show where he was exhibiting for the very first time. While sitting in my booth at Quilt Market in Houston I would hear bits of conversations from the people strolling by. I remember hearing a woman from Germany (at least it sounded like a German accent) telling her friend that she was disappointed that she hadn't seen any cowboys.

Does this look like the road to anywhere? I was feeling

like I was in the Twilight Zone again!

Flooding is becoming a problem. I was hoping I wouldn't have

to turn around due to water over the road and I did luck out there.

All with roads were passable between Rockwall and Quitman.

The best cab driver in Houston Texas

Well, Quilt Market is over! I have been taking a cab from the RV resort to the George R Brown Convention Center twice a day for the past four days. I have had a variety of cab drivers. I just want everyone to know that this driver is the BEST. His name is LEO and he loaded my entire booth in the back of his cab and unloaded it for me at the campground! He never complained once about me paying with a credit card (unlike a couple of other cab drivers) and was cheerful and very helpful! He told me he enjoys people and loves being a cab driver, and it showed! Thank you Leo, you are an inspiration! (And yes he received a very nice tip!)

Ricky Tims and a Star Studded Day

So if you read my previous post you know I started my day with quilting icon Jinny Beyer. Well, I met Ricky Tims a few hours later and took the photo op when it presented itself at the Red Rooster booth, the quilt behind us is my new pattern design "Forget Me Not" featuring Ricky's fabric. Red Rooster is offering the pattern and fabric as a kit!

Later in the day I talked with Paula Nadelstern and Jane Sassaman. I'd say it was a star studded day for me!

Waiting to get into the convention center this morning I met Jinny Beyer and introduced myself. She has carried my patterns in her shop for a number of years, but I had never met her in person. We had a lovely chat and walked a few of the market aisles together before the show opened. Later I had this photo taken with her at her book signing. The book is titled: The Quilters Album of Patchwork Patterns, more than 4050 Pieced Blocks for Quilters. Published by Breckling Press. It's a beauty just like Jinny!

The final stretch of driving. This photo is just coming into Dallas. Rainy on and off all day. I finally get to the convention center in Houston and unload the bulk of my booth sans the quilt and bag samples.

I will set up tomorrow.

I find an RV park about 7 miles away call them and get a spot for the duration.

Tomorrow and the following days I will take a cab to the show and back to the RV park (Actually they call it an RV Resort)

So I get all settled in and am feeling pretty good about all the arrangements. I go to check my email and do a little book work and (pardon my english again but) HOLY CRAP. My computer isn't working. Now I really do need this not just for blogging but for running my business.

I have a MacBook Pro that runs Windows XP (for bookkeeping) the Mac Side works perfectly the Windows side is LOCKED and I can't do a thing with it. So I fool with it for awhile to no avail. Then I call my buddy at the Geek Squad up in Minnesota, he's not working and another Geek Squad guy says they can't help me over the phone. He say's take it to the Best Buy in Houston and gives me the address and phone number. UUUgggghhhh! I don't have time to do that!

Then just before he hangs up he says," or you could call the Geek Squad main headquarters and see if they will help you over the phone. So I try it. But before I do I dig out the software from under the seat and in doing so I bump my head, really hard on the cabnet. So picture me now, holding the only frozen thing I could find (Archer Farms Chipotle Adobo Chicken Entree) on my noggin and crying because it hurt and because everything is going wrong!

But, here is the amazing and wonderful thing. After my phone conversation with the guy at 1-800-GEEKSQUAD, I logged in at http://www.geeksquad.com/SUPPORT (write that down) and chose the Geek Squad Guy that I wanted to work with (they have little photos) then with my permission he connected with my computer remotely, via. Log Me In Rescue, took a look at the problem. Then he gave me an estimate. I paid with a credit card. He fixed it lickety split (remotely) while I watched.

Simply amazing! Simply Simple! No driving to Best Buy, just sat in my camper and watched in amazement!

All's well that ends well! Now I am going to sleep, big day tomorrow!

Billboard Ads

So, have you wondered how I choose the shops I visit? Let me tell you it's not planned or scientific. I just drive which ever direction I feel like. Sometimes I change course to miss a storm or weather that's too hot etc. Sometimes I consult my list of existing customers. Sometimes I consult the Quilters Travel Companion Book. Sometimes I google. Sometimes I follow signs or read billboards.

Today between Dallas and Houston a billboard on the left side of the road (heading south) caught my eye.

It was the word "Fabric" . . .

When I read the whole thing it said, "Fabric less dancers" So and So's Cabaret.

I immediately thought to my self, "Ooh LaLa, I guess I won't find any fat-quarters in there!"

PS I am less than 2 hours from the convention center!!! Yeah! I am going to have a Skinny Cow and then, BACK on the road!

Now, I am all CHARGED UP!

So I am on the road again. This time headed to Houston, Texas for Quilt Market. Last night was a rough one. Not much sleep. I left home a half a day earlier than planned and was excited that I might be able to fit in a couple of shop visits on the way down. Well the excitement was squelched by a long cold night in the camper with very little sleep.

I left home around 2:30 pm and drove to Mason City Iowa. When I decided that was enough driving for the day, I pulled into a Walmart parking lot for the night which means, no hookups, no electricity. I park, pull the shades, make a PB&J sandwich, turn on the heat, check my emails, do a little bookwork, crawl in bed, play scrabble on my iphone and go to sleep.

About 4 hours later I wake up to rain on the roof and just as I am drifting back to sleep I hear what sounded like a drip-drip-drip. So I crawl out of bed following the sound it leads me to the ignitor for the furnace, so it was a click-click-click, not a drip-drip-drip. (In the middle of the night they sound similar.) I look at the thermostat and it confirms the furnace is not working. So I play with the thermostat trying to get it to turn on. NO luck. Then I look at the control panel that tells you the status of all the gee wiz mechanical devices and see that the auxillary battery is dead! Holy Crap. (Excuse my language). I try to start the generator to recharge the battery - it won't start.

By now I am quite chilled and so dig out sweat pants and a sweat shirt to pull on over my pj's and add slippers to complete my ensemble. Then I remembered there is a switch in the cab that will transfer the vehicles battery to the auxillary battery. So I start the engine hold the switch and viola' the battery leaps to life, I can now run the generator and charge the battery. Whew!

Now you are NOT suppose to sleep when the generator is running, due to the remote chance there is a problem and the exhaust enters the camper, in which case you would never wake up. So I sit up and wait and yawn waiting for the battery to charge. I consult the gee wiz mechanical device panel and wow wee it's fully charged. So I turn off the generator, leave the furnace on and go back to sleep.

Quiet . . . peaceful . . . toasty warm sleep under that mountain of quilts on my bed. Aahh, this is more like it, sleep, sleep, a little more sleep. . .

Not so fast!

About an hour later I had to repeat the whole process and then the hour after that AND the hour after that. You could say I was just a bit tired and CRABBY this morning! And being that I am traveling alone, there was no one here to be CRABBY AT, (nothing worse than that ;-).

Tonight I am in an RV park and I AM PLUGGED IN!

Apparently when you haven't used a camper for a few weeks or a month or so, you need to plug it in to a 30 amp electrical outlet for at least 24 hours BEFORE you leave. As my mother always says, "live and learn".

Yes, I am home again. Sometimes that just happens on a trip, as soon as you turn the car around, it's ZOOM, ZOOM, ZOOM. I did drive straight through from Billings Montana to Elk River Minnesota. Well, now that I am home here is what I want to do. Sit on this porch and listen to the rain . . .

But NO, there is NO time for such luxuries right now.
I have patterns to edit, quilts and bags to sew. Testers to contact.
Fall Quilt Market is just around the corner and there is
no time to waste!

First Glimpse of the Rockies

Boyhood home of Lawrence Welk

Last Saturday I worked on my new quilt pattern from 7 am to 11 pm. Writing and working on illustrations. I still have a long way to go.

Sunday was a drive day, about 8 hours worth and I took lots of photos. Don't worry I won't make you look at them all! I did how ever drive through the town that Lawrence Welk grew up in. Here is the main street.

It was a bit of a ghost town at the time I drove through, but then I realized that it was Sunday morning and I'll bet everyone was at church!

They certainly are proud of the fact that it is Lawrences boyhood town.

I was quite taken with this little home. I approached this house from the back and it had me charmed instantly.

The front!!! Adorable!!!

Amazing the power of red geraniums and a picket fence! So anyway this town got me thinking about my own memories of the Lawrence Welk Show. If you are much younger than I am you probably don't even know who Lawrence Welk is. I am sure my kids don't. Well, he had a TV variety show. And every Saturday night my two sisters and I would have our baths and hair washing and then we'd get the step up stool. Sitting between our mom's feet on that step up stool we watched The Lawrence Welk show and have our hair put up in rollers for Sunday morning church. This was before curling irons and hot rollers. First she used the bristly rollers that you couldn't lay on. So you had to sleep with your face in the pillow because the rollers hurt your head. If you happen to roll over while sleeping OOOHhh you knew it immediately and rolled back on your face to go back to sleep. Eventually we got the pink sponge rollers !!!! Yippee Skippy they were easy to sleep on. I did usually lose one or two by morning and so had all these beautiful springy curls and a few clumps of stick straight hair. Oh well. It was a great time to be a kid.

Oh, and my favorite on the LW show were the Lennon Sisters, or was it Lemmon Sisters?

Google them as well as Lawerence Welk, I am sure there are YouTube videos for a walk down memory lane. Or if you are too young for memory lane consider it historical research. See you later!

Dog Butts and Horse Apples . . .

Ah hah! I see my catchy title has you reading on. ; 0

I have landed myself in the perfect campground! When I pulled up it look much like any other campground found across the US of A. So I went through the twenty questions at the front desk (as referred to in a previous post), paid and pulled into my spot for the night. I hooked up and went inside to check emails. And that's when I heard it . . . Moooo. Could that be a cow? I looked around and couldn't see any cows. So I went back to work. Again MOOOOO! That was definitely a cow! Out my drivers side window is a thick row of hedges, I suppose there could be cows on the other side?

Later I took my dog Bastian out for a walk. We did a loop around the perimeter of the campground and look at what we found!!!

Yes'er eeee, those are not cows but HORSES!
There is a wire fence between the back of the
campsites and the horses. How cool is that!

OK, here is where my dog meets the horse.
First they peer at each other over the crest of the hill.

The horse steps forward first, then my dog,
then the horse again and then my dog.
Finally they both stand like statues
mirroring each other, both wondering
what the other will do?

Suddenly my dog drops his nose to the ground
forgetting all about the horse.
Here is where the horse apples come in!!!

Bastian is like, "WOW, what that great smell?"
I am quite sure there would have been some
rolling in it if I had not had the leash on him.

Then Bastian bolts off to the side,
looking for more interesting things to
smell, leaving the horse wondering,
"Hey, where are you going?"
"We just met!"

And here is where the dog butts come in.

Nope, no other dog butts. It's just that
following my dog down this cool path
that's what you get to see. Not his
cute cute face but his butt.

Will he stop to sniff these flowers? NO! He's a dog.

Something good here perhaps?

Oh and by the way . . .
My camper is to the right of this path
Cows to the left.

One final thing I must share about this
campground. They cook for you on Friday
and Saturday nights! It's an outdoor BBQ cookout
and you can smell the Baby Back Ribs,
Brisket and BBQ Chicken cooking all day.

Served with a tall lemonade or ice tea.
And you can eat there on picnic tables
or have it delivered right to your campsite.
YUMMM. Gotta go, time to eat.

Why not Minot . . .

This morning I woke up to a very loud thunder storm.
Bastian, my Airedale was so frightened he was shaking, poor guy.
By the time we left Minot and headed south
it was only a drizzly-misty kind of day.

Now this is exactly what I think of when I think of North Dakota.
Prairie, an occasional abandoned building dotting the country side.
Cattle ranches and of course a few cowboys.

But there are some nice sized lakes too!

Love this billboard.
So far I have also seen ones that say,
"smile", and "be kind".

(sorry the photo is blurry, a hazard of driving and shooting)

As I was crossing this body of water I was thinking,
"there is some major energy being transferred here!"

. . . little did I know what I'd see down the road!

Is it just me? or am I wrong in my thinking that
North Dakota must be a major power source for
the entire nation?

And I thought it was just prairie and cattle and a few cowboys!

Hmmmm, all the stereo types that are busted when you get in your car and drive!

Grand Forks to Minot North Dakota

Today I visited no quilt shops. : (

While I am on the road I still have to do all the things I normally do, so today I re-did four of my existing pattern covers and spiffed them up with new photos. Created a barcode. Got a printing estimate. Then sent the photos for the patterns off to the printer. Sent PO's to get the printing process scheduled. I should see proofs in a day or two. Thank heavens for laptops, cell phones, email, ftp sites, and a printer who is great to work with long distance! And I do mean long distance. Hi Maggi ; )

The rest of the day I spent driving. Below are photos taken between Grand Forks and Minot. I was driving through a section of North Dakota that was very flat with not a lot of trees when I came upon the windbreak in the photo below it reminded me of Dr Seuss trees!

Below is a shot from my camper window at a rest stop where
I stopped to make a cup of coffee. It looks like I could be in Minnesota.

Here is a cool old bank building. I came upon it while following
signs for a campground (which I never found). Good thing
there are Walmart Parking lots everywhere.

In the Studio

I'll be off the road for a bit. There are certain things I have to be in the studio to do. Today I needed to #1 send artwork to my licensing agent in Tokyo, #2 work on bag project that I will be introducing at fall market, and #3 put the binding on my granddaughters quilt. I'll be posting more on the quilt later on my ideas blog. (see photo below)

The drive was spectacular!
The weather sunny and cool with
no humidity!!! aka HEAVEN!

This Mama White Tail deer and her fawn put on a little
show for me. The fawn had run ahead of the doe
and got up on the pavement and freaked out, turning
wildly in circles, while the doe waited in the ditch.
Finally the baby came to it's senses and ran back toward
it's mother and escaped any injury.

Shortly after seeing the deer I saw a mink lop (not lope)
it was definately a lop, lop, lop across the road. Sorry no photo.

The rest of the photos are where I spent the 4th of July,
in Presque Isle, WI.

To Lie or Not to Lie, that is the Question

I don't lie. I was taught not to lie. But when traveling alone in this big ol'country of ours I don't always want to let people know I am alone in that camper. When I get to a campground and am being checked in by a man, I always sign the registration form with both my name and my husbands. And I try and remember to say, "we and us" in stead of "me and I". Not always easy to remember. They have a check list of things they always ask. What kind of hook up? Size of vehicle? Towing anything? Pets? Number of people?

How do I answer the number of people question without lying? Well, I don't answer the question. I kind of pinch my lips together like a kid does when he doesn't want to answer. And then reluctantly I hold up two fingers giving them the PEACE SIGN. I can't help it if they interpret it to mean 2 people. Right?

Well, last night I was checking in and it was a woman putting me through the 20 questions routine. I was thinking about how to describe her. First I thought of Aunt Bea from the Andy Griffith show, but with a drill Sargent personality. But then Berta the housekeeper from Two and a Half men came to mind. So picture Berta, with Blondie-grey hair in a bun and cat-eye glasses, leaning on the counter with her left forearm filling out the form. Never looking up at me she drilled me with the list.

You want a pull through? "Sure"
Full hook-up? "Yes"
Towing anything? "No"
How longs your rig? 31'
Number of people? "Just me"
Puppy? "No"

Then without moving anything, except her eyes, she slowing looks up peering at me over her glasses, pauses and says in a reprimanding voice. "When other women travel alone, they at least bring their dog along."

Oh boy, I guess I was told.

Here's my thoughts on the matter. If I bring my dog, then I have to walk my dog and then I am advertising that I am traveling alone.

If I don't have my dog, I can pull up, close the curtains, lock the doors and nobody knows if there is a single woman or five biker guys in that camper.

What's your opinion??? Sent me your comments, I'd like to know what you think.

I am really not that fearful, but others are for me, like the woman who checked me in.

So I am in the rental car that I used to get from the campground to the convention center and I decide to use my GPS to see how far it is to Frank Lloyd Wrights famous - Falling Water House. So I use the google search feature and it says 9.8 miles!!!! Who hoo. I decide to leave that very minute, I am so close it only makes sense right?

So I follow the GPS woman and she leads me through some beautiful country, I even saw a white tail doe grazing by the side of the road as I wound myself through the hilly terrain of the Pennsylvania countryside. When I am about a mile away the GPS says turn on Bucktail Road. There was no Bucktail Road and when I went past the spot she told me to "make a U-turn if possible". So I U-turned and turned when she said turn on Bucktail Road. There was a road there it just had a different name. So I figured that perhaps the road had been renamed for some reason.

Then I saw to the left some covered picnic areas with low slung red roofs and wide eaves, signature FLW stuff. I was so excited, I must be very close! Then quite suddenly the road ended in an apartment complex - nothing FLW looking about it either. So I made another U-turn and headed back.

There was a huge white dump truck with one of those chippers that turns branches into mulch parked along side the winding road so I pulled over and holler at the driver who was just sitting in the cab with his white hard hat on. "Excuse Me" I yelled. "Do you know if Frank Lloyd Wrights, Falling Water is around here?"

"What?" he yelled back, as he turn off the engine of the huge truck. Then pop, pop. From behind the truck popped two younger hard hat bearing men.

I repeated my question.

"AWE LADY", the man shouts, "You're two hours away from Falling Water!" "You're kidding me right? You're joking aren't you?" He turns to one of the younger guys,"she's joking right?" The younger guy looks at me, shakes his head as he says "No, she's not". I am sure disappointment was written all over my face.

The truck driver tries to cheer me up by saying, "It's not that great anyway, I've been there twice and it's no big deal". Then looking at me, a few seconds later he says, "Unless your into architecture . . . then it's a big deal" and proceeds to call out directions on exactly how I could get there from where I was.

One of the younger guys, mentions to me that one of my tires is kind of low. (See that WHEEL thing again!) I said."Its a rental, is it too bad to drive back to the rental place?" He said, "no you should be fine." Truck driver chimes in,"It's just a rental".

Then I thanked them all and left.

Not such a lucky day for me and Falling Water, but lucky that I got the rental returned without having to change the tire! Falling Water will have to wait for me. Next time I'm in the neighborhood, I am sure SHE will still be there. ; )

International Quilt Market - Pittsburgh PA

All the photos posted today were taken at Spring Quilt Market. International Quilt Market is where shop owners from all around the world come together to buy for their stores. Below is a view of the convention center from the parking lot where I parked my car. I was there before 9:00am and still couldn't get a spot in the convention center parking lot and had to park a few blocks away. Better than yesterday, I was 5 blocks away! (Thank Heavens it wasn't raining!)

The Quilted Closet, Elaine Waldschmidt's booth. I was disappointed that I missed Elaine, she is a very fun lady who always has me in stitches (no pun intended).

Once again I waited for the customers to clear out to see Gary and Kim Schaffer.

I fell in love with this hand dyed wool coat by Ewe-nique Creations.

There were quite a number of booths featuring garment
patterns for children and infants. A new trend for the quilt market.

Someone once told me the show was the size of three
football fields. I am thinking that looks about right . . .

markets in a row. It was really fun to simply walk the
show, meet new vendors and see old friends.

It's Schoolhouse day at International Quilt Market. I snapped a few photos at Lonni Rossi's presentation.

Here is David Weinstein of Andover Fabrics modeling one of the two "Big Easy Tote Bags" that I'd sewn up in Lonni's fabrics.

As I went to leave for the day I passed this long long line of quilt shop owners waiting for Sample Spree to begin. The line went as far as the eye could see inside the building.

Here the line bends around the corner and lines up outside the door.

And continues for a long long long way.

Pretty Amazing!

Almost Sisters Quilt Shop - Cambridge, OH

Don't you just love the name of this shop? As soon as I heard it, it made me smile because the faces of all my friends that I'd consider almost sisters flashed through my mind.

I arrived at this shop very late in the day and I was pretty exhausted when I walked in the door. Evelyn, one of the shop owners asked if I'd like a cup of coffee and I said, "YES, I'd love one." She made a fresh pot and while showing patterns I proceed to down two of those HUGE coffee mugs full of delicious coffee. I felt much better as we chattered away about the quilt industry, patterns etc. But BEWARE those large cups - there is a DARK SIDE too! I must have been quite shaky when I shot this photo of Evelyn, and my eyes must have been out of whack too, because when I reviewed the photo in the camera it looked fine. So sorry Evelyn!

Evelyn is a brand new shop owner. She bought this store (formerly The Stitchin Post) in January of this year. She will be attending her first Quilt Market this weekend. I can't wait to see what she does with this shop. Don't you love the cozy reading and hubby spot she's created by the fireplace?

The shop is located in the former Brady's Hardware store a turn of the century 2 story brick building with all the charms of that era, wooden floors and tin ceiling included.

Truth be Told - Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Well yes, I did really make that nice Italian meal last night. BUT, truth be told most of my meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) on the road consist of cold breakfast cereal with raw nuts, berries, and a latte! Easy to make (just like a Scrap-bag™ pattern) and delicious!

Camper Cooking

OK foodies. I haven't forgotten you.
Here's a taste of camper cooking Jamie style.

Yup that's a jar of canned spaghetti sauce, organic of course. I took apart two sweet Italian sausages and made mini meat balls. Then added the fresh ingredients, tomato, basil and fresh mozzarella.

Cooked the pasta, added the sauce.

A nice glass of wine is always a plus with any Italian dish. And look what I found, these are little bottles 187ml = 1 glass! Perfect when you travel alone and have no one to share a whole bottle with. I had the Shiraz.

Viola!

Crusty fresh bread with butter. Yum!

Meet Mary owner of this sweet quilt shop. When I called Mary for an appointment I asked her about the parking. She assured me she could help me get in and out of her parking lot with my rig. When I got there I was afraid I wouldn't make it being a newbie at driving a 31' vehicle, so I paused at her driveway and then drove on past. So when I called her, Mary being the sweetheart that she is had her husband drive over to the gas station that I was calling her from to pick me up and bring me to her shop so she could see my patterns! Well, I have never been offered chauffeur service before!

Mary has a cute shop that was quite busy at the time of my visit.

It was really fun to see her cute quilt shop surrounded by the picket fence. Quilters Alley is also only a few blocks from the museum and has plenty of easy access parking, even for vehicles like mine.

A short walk from the National Quilt Museum you will find Eleanor Burns Quilt in a Day Quilt Shop.

Meet Laura (left) and Bobbi (Right) two delightful employess.

The store front has this beautiful set of windows.
The girls tell me this building was a bar in its early years.
It certainly converted nicely into a charmer of a quilt shop!

Eleanor was not in the shop, but her presents was known.
The original tiled floor (below) couldn't be more appropriate.
